The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) was established in 1983. It is the leading professional institute representing geoscientists employed in all sectors of industry, education, research and government throughout Australia. Members work in a diverse range of fields, from exploration and mining geology for minerals, energy resources and construction materials, geological investigations for construction projects, geological mapping, environmental protection remediation of contaminated land, water resource management, soil science, natural hazard management and teaching. The Institute has more than 3,000 members both in Australia and overseas.

AIG is one of three parent bodies of the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) which sets standards for reporting exploration results, mineral resource and ore reserves estimates by companies in Australia and New Zealand and is a model for comparable codes globally.
