Masonic Care WA has launched the $45 million first stage of its Middle Swan Aged Care Campus at a ground-breaking ceremony this morning.
The non-profit provider of residential housing and care services for seniors, which is also associated with the Freemason’s organisation, has appointed construction company Badge to start the first stage of the three-part project.
Located on the corner of Great Northern Highway and Eveline Road, Middle Swan, the campus will be spread across six hectares, featuring a 124-bed aged care facility, focusing on the specific needs of those living with dementia, which the organisation said was urgently needed in the area.
Once those beds are delivered, Masonic Care will jump from 17th place on the Business News Data & Insights Aged Care Provider’s list to 11th place with a total of 470 aged care beds. Click here to access the full list, which is ranked by total number of beds.
The first stage is anticipated to take about 18 months to deliver, with future development plans for the campus to include retirement housing and low-cost rental housing for older Western Australians.
Masonic Care WA plans to develop the campus over the next five years, with a total build estimate of $200 million.
“This has been a five-year process getting to this point; as we sourced the best location, here on the old Primary School site in Middle Swan,” Masonic Care WA chief executive Marie-Louise MacDonald said.
“We also had to apply for aged care bed licences from the Commonwealth and were successful in 2018, and of late plan and undertake the planning and building processes which was disrupted for a short period due to COVID-19 shutdowns.”
Midland MLA Michelle Roberts, who attended the ground-breaking ceremony, said the first stage of construction would provide an 18-month economic locally and provide hundreds of jobs.
“There’s a high demand for good aged-care accommodation and future development stages of this project will provide a massive number of aged care units that are much needed,” Ms Roberts said.
The $200 million Middle Swan Aged Care Campus is part of a flowing pipeline of seniors living projects taking shape across Western Australia, which includes Curtin Heritage Living’s $130 million Waterfront Cottesloe/Marine Views project (now under construction) and Southern Cross Care’s $55 million proposal for a nursing home in Jolimont, which recently received development approval.
