NFP revenues swell

They don’t exist to make money, but Western Australia’s largest not-for-profit businesses, including HBF, RAC and St John of God Health Care, have all recorded increased revenue, according to BNiQ research.

Business News can reveal the top 20 NFP businesses in WA have grown their revenue for the 2014-15 financial year by 10.7 per cent on average, compared with the previous period.

While counted in the top 20, this data fail to include AFL teams West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers or grain exporter CBH Group, as they have not released their most recent financial year results.

Organisations to achieve a large rise in revenue include P&N Bank (up 44 per cent), aged care provider Juniper (up 28.3 per cent), and Geraldton Fishermen's Co-operative (up 24.1 per cent).

Apart from Juniper’s stand out result other health and aged care providers recorded a range of more modest gains with Amana Living increasing its revenue 13.8 per cent, followed by St John of God Health Care (up 12.9 per cent), MercyCare (up 11.3 per cent), Silver Chain (up 9.1 per cent), St John Ambulance (up 4.4 per cent), Brightwater Care Group (up 3.7 per cent), Baptistcare (up 2.7 per cent), Southern Cross Care WA (up 1.8 per cent) and Bethanie (up 0.5 per cent).

Health insurers Health Insurance Fund and HBF recorded gains of 6.7 per cent and 3.5 per cent respectively. 

Earlier this month, Business News reported on the financial results of St John Ambulance, which also increased its surplus following increased income from ambulance trips, health department contracts and first aid training and Silver Chain, whose surplus slipped following increased investment in new client offerings and service delivery methods.

While many not for profit businesses reported similar staff levels, notable increases included 291 extra staff at Silver Chain (total 3,232), 143 extra staff at Amana Living (total 1,430) 100 extra staff at Baptistcare (total 1,700), and 40 extra staff at HIF (total 100).

Southern Cross Care WA reported 214 fewer staff (total 986).
